Living Together

Educational Materials

Orange lozenge left

This material is intended for use by teachers and youth group leaders working with young people aged 11-18. It can be used in situations in which students in different countries meet, physically or virtually, to discuss issues of shared interest. The material has been trialled in classes where English is spoken as a second or other language as well as in first language classes. The material has also been translated into a number of languages – please contact your country’s British Council office for details.

The material has been used successfully in countries across South-East Europe. The materials were revised in the light of feedback from these countries.

The materials comprise five units on the following themes:

Unit 1 - Migration
Why do people have to leave their homes and migrate to other countries?
Download here

Unit 2 - Integration
Is it a good idea for different cultural groups to integrate or is it better to stay separate? Download here

Unit 3 - Tensions
When people of different cultures and backgrounds come together, there are tensions. How can these be dealt with? Download here

Unit 4 - Whose values should dominate?
Minority groups are vulnerable even in democratic societies – what is there to protect them? Download here

Unit 5 - Participation in public life
Why should members of minority groups participate in public life and how easy is that to achieve? Download here

Teachers' Notes
There is also a set of teachers’ notes. Download here

The materials are designed to be used in schools and colleges participating in the British Council’s Living Together school linking programme.  However, the British Council is pleased to offer this material free to other teachers working on these important themes.
