ILEC

Why do ILEC?

The International Legal English Certificate is an examination designed to assess English language competence in a legal context. It is suitable for law students and practising lawyers who are seeking employment in an international legal setting.

What the exam involves

The exam consists of four separate papers:

Name of the paper    Duration of the part
Test of Reading    75 minutes
Test of Writing    75 minutes
Test of Listening    40 minutes
Test of Speaking    16 minutes

For more information about Sample exam papers, handbooks for teachers and past papers, see the official Cambridge ILEC website.

Getting your results

All written papers are sent to Cambridge to be marked and results are released approximately eight weeks after the exam date. They will be sent to the British Council and we will forward them to your home address.

Certificates are awarded in three passing grades — C1 Pass with Merit, C1 Pass and B2 Pass — based on the aggregate of marks gained in the four papers. All candidates are provided with a Statement of results which includes a graphical display of the candidate’s performance in each paper. These are shown against the scale Exceptional — Good — Borderline — Weak and indicate the candidate’s relative performance in each paper. Note that there are no Pass/Fail marks for individual papers, hence there is no requirement to reach a particular level in any paper in order to achieve a Pass in the examination.
