Citizenship Education in Urban Contexts

Report & Resources from a Council of Europe course - Manchester 22-26 November 2005    

Through the Council of Europe in-service training programme and as a part of the UK's commitment to the European Year of Citizenship through Education 2005 the above workshop was organised in Manchester. It was led by John Lloyd, Citizenship Advisor for the Department for Education and Skills in collaboration with Judy Tideswell, Manchester Education Partnership Consultant for Citizenship. The workshop attracted considerable interest from teachers, heads, deputies, teacher trainers, inspectors, representatives from non-governmental organisations and citizenship co-ordinators. 35 participants from 19 countries were selected to attend the 5-day workshop. The workshop activities including lectures outlining citizenship education and participation in England, an opportunity to compare experience across Europe, visits to schools, interactive group work, action research and a comprehensive cultural programme.
