The UK is transforming into a nation of interior designers. Turn on UK TV and you are more likely to find yourself watching a home makeover programme than any other type of show. Designers like Linda Barker and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen have become household names by showing how easy it is to create living spaces that have their own unique character.

How can it happen so fast?

It doesn't take much to modernise a living room, or transform a cluttered kitchen into a smart and simple workspace.  According to the designers, all you need is a small budget, some planning, plenty of energy and a bit of imagination. What's more, they can prove it. And now that people are realising how easy it is to transform their homes, furniture shops, showrooms and DIY shops are busier than ever. The more people shop, the cheaper it becomes. The cheaper it becomes, the more people shop. The result is a design revolution with record spending on household interiors.

Why is it happening?

Some people say that the new wave of creative decorating and furnishing is proof that the British are nothing like their old fashioned image. Others claim the economy has helped - people aren't going out as much as they used to, so home-making has become more important. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that the UK is experiencing a creative revolution that everyone, it seems, is joining in with.
