Café Scientifique (2)

Café Scientifique initiates conversations and discussions about the connections between science, technology and society. It is a concept that has been adapted by the British Council to engage a wider audience with science and the impact it has on our lives.

Activity 1: pre-reading task

Do you spend much time in cafes? What do you typically do? Do you do the following things often? Sometimes? Never?

1. have a cup of coffee
2. meet friends
3. talk about politics
4. have something to eat
5. read the newspaper/magazine/book
6. use your mobile
7. study
8. listen to a lecture
9. discuss the latest advances in science
10. talk to a leading scientist face-to-face

Do you do the last three in the list?

Probably not, but at various cafes around the world you can.

See http://www.britishcouncil.org/science-society-cafesci-intro.htm

Activity 2: Reading activity

Look at a page which tells you what sort of events Café Scientifique has organised.

Then return here to do one activity in which you are asked to reorder information from the texts, and another activity in which you match events to places.

Activity 3: Follow-up task

Which advances in science would you like to discuss at the British Council in your country?

Write and tell us.
