British Council Latvia

Mobile Identities

Continuing the idea of the project MultiTalks, EUNIC Latvia participants – British Council, French Institute in Latvia, Danish Cultural Institute, Goethe-Institute and Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Latvia  – are organising a series of events, dedicated to the intercultural dialogue.

The project MultiTalks was created in cooperation with the Latvian Academy of Culture, Latvian National Commission for UNESCO and European Commission Representation in Latvia, researching and recognizing the connections between the questions of multilingualism and identity in the modern world. Inspired by families, living in Latvia and speaking different languages or belonging to different cultures, students of the Latvian Academy of Culture created various works of art. The students' works were exhibited in the EU House in Riga, and in MultiTalks continuation they will travel and visit all EUNIC Latvia organizations. Every month, the MultiTalks works of art will be exhibited at one of EUNIC organizations, which in that month will hold an intercultural event, dedicated to one of diversity and cultural interaction.

This series of intercultural events was started on December 15, 2011, by Institute of France Culture in Latvia, inviting us to discuss the role of different cultures and languages in relationships and family.

The British Council suggests to look into the subject of linguistic and cultural diversity, researching the global migration processes. Migration in particular is one of the most significant factors, promoting diversity and cultural interaction in the modern world. Intercultural event of the project MultiTalks – MOBILE IDENTITIES will take place at the British Council on January 31, 2012, at 6:00 P.M. The program of the event includes meeting with the head of International Organization of Migration Riga office, Dr. Ilmārs Mežs, watching a British documentary Moving to Mars and a discussion after the film. The program will be enriched with comments of a British expert in diversity issues Mr. Tristan Ace about the topicality of this film and the situation of Burmese refugees in Great Britain.

MultiTalks intercultural event Moving/Mobile Identities at the British Council will be opened by Dr. Ilmārs Mežs, answering the questions:

The issue of global migration will be treated, using the example of the Asian country Burma. At the intercultural event a film Moving to Mars will be shown, depicting the refuge to Great Britain of a small ethnic group, living in Burma. Forced to leave their homeland because of political conditions, these people, who spend the preceding years at a refugee camp in Thailand, are going to the British city Sheffield. The film intimately depicts the experience of families, finding themselves in 21st century Europe, their acquaintance with and taking a liking to the culture of Great Britain. At the same time the film in a wider context speaks about the consequences upon thousands of lives, made by the political context of Burma, its insecure situation. Before the film, it will be commented upon by an expert in diversity issues Mr. Tristan Ace, working at the British Council office in Burma.

In the conclusion of the event, the participants, inspired by the story of the film, will be invited to join a discussion about the global migration issues, migration aspects, important for Latvia, as well as the connections between the questions of multilingualism and identity. The discussion will be hosted by a participant of the British Council project Intercultural Navigators and the author of the initiative I am Priceless, Mr. Artūrs Slišāns.
