This year again, the British Council in co-operation with the Modern Languages Department of the University of Latvia runs a competition for young translators. The aim is to enhance interest of young people in translators’ work and to promote contemporary literature from the UK.

Task
The task is to translate the story Visiting Takabuti by Bernard MacLaverty from the collection Matters of Life and Death from English into Latvian or Russian.

Prize
The authors of the best translations into Latvian or Russian will be given the opportunity to study at a one-week translation seminar in the UK.
Three authors of quality translations will be awarded book vouchers worth £50.

Participation
The competition was open to all Latvian residents between the age of 16 and 23.
This year there were 120 participans. 74 submitted Latvian translations and 46 - Russian.

Shortlisted translations
The shortlisted Latvian translations were by Zane Akermane, Inese Buiķe, Lāsma Grants,  Anete Kona, Krists Kondrāts, Jānis Kreilis, Agate Labanovska, Juris Lebedoks, Līga Legzdiņa, Ilona Ozoliņa, Zane Pētersone, Jānis Polis, Maija Svile, Jana Vasile, Ilze Vasmane, Baiba Zaikovska and Gunita Zimacka.

The shortlisted Russian translations were by Eleonora Kapšule, Tatjana Hramova, Dmitrijs Šapošņikovs, Jeļena Šakure and Jekaterina Žabina.

Winners
The winners of the main prize are Līga Legzdiņa and Eleonora Kapšule.
The book vouchers go to Anete Kona, Maija Svile and Tatjana Hramova.
