Pre-university study

What preparation is available for international students in the UK?
To get prepared for an undergraduate study in the UK, a student will normally attend one of the three programs: A-levels or Scottish Highers, International Baccalaureate (IB) or International Foundation Year (IFY).  Alternatively, you can take on a course in the same specialization as your intended study in the UK for 1-2 years at a local university.
What are minimum entry requirements?
For A-levels or IB, one needs to have GCSE qualification or complete 10-11 grades of school and have a minimum IELTS score of 4.5-5.0. For IFY an applicant will normally complete high school or 11-12 grades in his home country and have a minimum IELTS score of 4.5-5.0.
What is the difference between A-levels, IB and International Foundation Year?

A-levels or Scottish Higher is a two-year intensive course, most widely accepted for entry to university. They are available in subjects from the humanities, arts, sciences and social sciences as well as in practical subjects such as engineering and leisure and tourism. You will study up to four subjects simultaneously over two years, taking AS level examinations at the end of your first year and A level qualifications at the end of your second.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma – is a demanding two-year programme for pupils aged 16 to 19. It is offered by international schools in different countries, including the UK, and leads to final examinations and a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the world. In format IB is similar to A-levels except that pupils study up to 6 subjects. Learn more .

International Foundation Year (IFY) is a one-year course designed for international students to help them bridge any gaps so they can begin a degree course at a UK university, whether this is because one needs to improve English language skills, or academic qualifications, or both.

How do I apply for a pre-university training program?
Applications for pre-university training programs are submitted directly to educational institutions – schools, colleges, study centers or universities (IFY). You can find out about documents and application procedure by contacting institutions or checking their brochures or websites.
Does completion of a pre-university training guarantee acceptance on an undergraduate course?
Completion of a pre-university training does not normally guarantee a place on an undergraduate course for which there is a separate application procedure. However you will be offered all the support necessary to apply and get accepted on a degree course.
