Bugs

Bugs, creepy crawlies - they're those little creatures that we see everywhere. Find lots of materials about these amazing animals, including games, worksheets to print, flashcards, a song, and a story. You can find them here:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-topics-food

With these materials your child can:

practise the names of bugs in English
learn the names of an insect's body parts in English
learn facts about insects and bugs, including where they live and life cycles
practise words related to bugs and insects eg hive, larva
learn about malaria and quinine
listen to a traditional children's song

The materials are useful for your child's general education. They may be studying insects and habitats in their school science programmes.

There are also craft materials for very young learners (age 7 and under). Your young child can make a spider mobile or make their own insect habitat.

You can use these materials to practise English with your child. On this page you'll find an idea for an activity you can try with your child. On the left you'll also see a list of links to resources about this topic on teaching websites that you may find useful.

SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR CHILD

Incy Wincy is a traditional children's song. It is suitable for pre-school children and children in early primary. You can find the song here:
http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-songs-incy-wincy.htm

There is game you can play before you listen to the song. It's a good way to introduce words from the song. Click on the 'start game' button. Children left click and move the mouse to clear the window. They'll start to see a picture. How quickly cna they clean the window?

Now talk about the picture. What can you see? Introduce 'spider' and 'water spout' in English. Say the spider is called 'Incy Wincy'. You can introduce these words in English but can discuss the picture in your own language if your child doesn't speak much English. Ask your child: What's the spider going to do? What's a water spout? What comes down it?

Now click the button 'start song'. Listen to the song and watch the actions. Listen to the song again, and start to sing along.

This is an easy song to learn and you and your child can sing it whenever you like. There are actions you can do as you sing the song:

Finally there is a worksheet for the song that you can print and do with your child, or you can print the lyrics:
