To apply to Cambridge or Oxford University – since you can apply to one of the two – you must send in your Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS) application by 15 October for the following academic year (e.g. to apply for an undergraduate course starting in September 2006, you must have sent in your application by 15 October 2005)

I have just finished high school in Jordan. Can I apply directly to any university in the UK for an undergraduate course?

Most universities would ask you to apply through UCAS for an undergraduate course, regardless of your high school qualifications, and some universities may accept you applying directly to them.

Can the British Council help me in filling out my UCAS application form?

It is no longer possible to make your UCAS application on a paper form. UCAS application is now available online from www.ucas.com/apply.

I am a British citizen and I have just finished high school in Jordan. I want to continue my studies in the UK. Will I be able to pay UK residents tuition fees?

This depends on the following:

1. You must be settled in the UK on the first day of the academic year of the course.
2. You must have been ‘ordinarily resident’* in the UK or Islands (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) for the full three-year period before the first day of the academic year of the course. For example, if your course begins in October 2008, you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK or Islands from 1 September 2005 to 31 August 2008.
3. The main purpose of your residence in the UK or Islands must not be to receive full-time education during any part of the three-year period.

You are ‘ordinarily resident’ in the relevant residence area if you have habitually, normally and lawfully resided in that area from choice. Temporary absences from the residence area can be ignored.

I hold a passport from one of the European Union (EU) countries. Will I be eligible for EU student fees if I apply to a university in the UK?

This depends on the following:

1. You must have been ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the full three-year period before the first day of the academic year of the course.
2. The main purpose of your residence in the EEA/Switzerland must not be to receive full-time education during any part of the three-year period.

The European Economic Area is a larger area than the EU. It is made up of all the countries in the EU, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Does the British Council offer any undergraduate scholarship programmes?

The British Council does not administer any scholarships that cover undergraduate studies. To find out more about scholarships for courses other than postgraduate studies, you should contact the universities themselves or the relevant organisations in the UK. Can I have a part-time job while studying in the UK?

On a student visa exceeding six months, you are allowed to work up to 20 hours during weekdays and as much as you want at weekends. The average wage is £5.00 per hour.

Does the British Council help a student to apply for a visa?

If a student applies through the British Council for English Language Training (ELT) placement, then the British Council will issue a letter of recommendation addressed to the British Embassy requesting the student be granted a visa. This, however, does not oblige the Embassy to actually grant the visa.

I am an Iraqi national. Can I apply for a Chevening scholarship at the British Council, Jordan?

To apply for a Chevening scholarship you have to be a national of the same country you apply in. For example, Jordanians apply to the British Council, Jordan; Iraqis apply to the British Council, Iraq.
