3 types of online tests available in English

Cambridge ESOL has developed an online version of BULATS in response to demand for a robust and reliable Business English language test with the flexibility to be taken at companies’ own offices at times that suit their needs. Among its assets:

User friendly
Instant results
No special software required
Available in four languages (English, German, Spanish and French)
International standards ( CEFR*and ALTE**)

*CEFR: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
**ALTE: Association of Language Testers in Europe

BULATS-Online is a test you can organise where and when it suits you and is quick and easy to administer. The online test can be taken at any computer which has a sound card and is accessed by Internet Explorer. This flexibility means that you do not need to send employees out to remote locations or use specialist and expensive equipment.

Who is that test for?

The BULATS-Online Test provides a fast, versatile and accurate method of testing language ability in the world of work. The BULATS-Online Test is more than just a set of questions; it exploits the latest developments in language testing technology to provide a fast, fully functional, 'stand-alone' method of assessing language ability. A highly sophisticated program, the BULATS Computer Test allows a rapid on-demand assessment of all levels of language ability.

How can we get the results?

Results from the test are available immediately. The results allow flexible reporting as well so you can score groups or individuals just as easily. This can help with time driven decisions such as recruitment or international placement.

How does BULATS Online work?

The Online Test pinpoints ability quickly and accurately by using 'adaptive' testing techniques. As a candidate progresses through the test the computer selects each question on the basis of the previous answer. As a result, the test becomes progressively easier or more difficult until a consistent level of ability is achieved. Each language option is available online, allowing users to purchase only those languages which are of most relevance to their employees. On-screen instructions are given in all test languages. Questions are presented on-screen, and candidates answer using keyboard and mouse. Practice screens are available, helping candidates familiarise themselves with the format of the program and the technology used. It is the responsibility of the end user to determine the appropriate level of invigilation for the test.

What does BULATS Online test?

The Online Test assesses listening and reading skills, and knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. It does not currently test writing or speaking: these are available as separate tests. The program draws on an extensive bank of questions during each test and as a result each test is virtually unique, reducing the risk of cheating.
