Teaching tip: A multi-level writing class
This activity is a great writing task to use in the first week or so with a new group. It gives the students a chance to find about you, their new teacher, and it also gives you a valuable opportunity to assess your students' level. It can also be a useful and productive class if you ever find yourself substituting a class at short notice.
Essential UK: Individual style
This lesson is about style and clothing and there are several tasks here that would be suitable for elementary level learners. It involves a classic drawing game and some discussion statements for students to agree or disagree with. There is also a reading text about individual style based on comments from people in Britain and a fun task to design a T-shirt.
Primary Tip: Using Arts and Crafts arts in English Lessons
In any English class it's important to vary the activity type to maintain interest. You will always be dealing with different types of learners, some prefer solving puzzles and singing songs, and some enjoy working in groups while others prefer working on their own. With Very Young Learners and Young Learners it's especially important to cater to the different learning styles in your classroom as when learning stops boredom can quickly take over. Here are some tips on how to successfully integrate arts and crafts into your lessons without becoming overwhelmed by a sea of cut up paper and losing your learners under piles of glue and sellotape.
Essential UK: Pet Mania
This lesson is about pets and some tasks are suitable for very low levels. Task 1 is a simple vocabulary game and Task 2 is a class survey about pets which can be adapted depending on the level. Task 3 is a role play situation between a parent and their son/daughter who desperately wants a pet and Task 4 is a reading text about the fashion of having a small dog as an accessory. Task 5 offers a selection of simple word games and the Task 6 is based on discussion statements about dogs.
