British Council India

NEW DELHI

New Delhi is the headquarters of the British Council in India. The landmark building in New Delhi has been designed by renowned Indian architect Charles Correa and opened in 1993.

The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. The purpose of the British Council is to create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide. In India, the British Council was established in 1948 and became a Division of the British High Commission in 1972.

The Director of the British Council in India is Rob Lynes.

We also have diplomatic centres in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. British libraries are run in co-operation with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in five cities in India: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Pune.

The British Council is recognised for its network of libraries and cultural centres with more than 100,000 members, along with a varied programme of arts and cultural events, science and technology, and climate. We also offer UK qualifications in India, opportunities to study in the UK and access to English language training and learning for both students and teachers. Education is a key area of our work where we partner, schools, educational institutions, government and other partners. Our Higher Education partnership - UKIERI 2 - between India and the UK works across several strands including skills development, research and training. Every year nearly 40,000 Indian students choose to study in the UK. We hold regular briefings and exhibitions of students planning to study in the UK. For more information about our Education UK programmes click here.

The British Council also manages prestigious scholarships and training awards, including the Chevening programme, the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan and the Charles Wallace India Trust awards. ( Click here for more information)

In New Delhi the British Council has an English teaching centre which provides a range of general and business English classes and increasingly a number of specialised skills based programmes. For information about English language courses click here.

We have a vibrant arts programme which brings the best collaborations, showcases and events in music, visual and performing arts, dance, theatre and creative industries. The Young Creative Entrepreneur programme has nurtured and partnered with some of the best talent in the country.
