Young Learners English

Cambridge ESOL examinations

The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests are designed to test the English of primary learners between the ages of 7 and 12.

They are designed to provide a positive testing experience and to have a positive impact on the children's future language learning. All test materials are presented attractively in full-colour.

They provide an appropriate first step towards the Cambridge ESOL Main Suite examinations, which are designed for young people and adults.

The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests - Levels of assessment

Starters is the lowest level and is designed for children from the age of 7, who have completed about 100 hours of learning.
Movers is the second level. A typical Movers candidate is likely to be aged between 8 and 11 and to have completed about 175 hours of English language learning.
Flyers is the highest level in the series. A typical Flyers candidate is likely to be aged between 9 and 12 and to have completed approximately 250 hours of learning.

Each level of the test has three components: Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking. Children take the test in their own classroom.

There is no fixed timetable for the Young Learners Tests. Tests are arranged with local needs and conditions taken into account. Registration should happen eight weeks in advance of the tests.
