About This Course

This course is for secondary school students who are currently studying in forms 3 and 4. The aims of this course are to help your child:

• to activate and extend their knowledge of English
• to develop their communicative skills of speaking and writing
• to develop their receptive skills of listening and reading
• to prepare for the First Certificate Examination

Course Objectives

Your child will work towards achieving a number of learning outcomes. These relate to the way language is used in real life situations, and are designed to help them develop their language skills in practical ways and will also prepare your child for the First Certificate Examination.

By the end of the course, your child will be able to:

Reading Skills

• use the title of a written text to identify with the topic and predict content
• read quickly to confirm predictions
• develop a strategy to examine a text for errors and to correct those errors

Speaking Skills

• develop negotiation and collaboration when speaking and show sensitivity to turn taking
• use a range of lexis to develop a topic in spoken English
• compare, contrast and comment on a series of illustrations

Writing Skills

• write a formal and informal transactional letter both asking for and giving information
• produce written text that is clear, appropriate, accurate and considers your reader's purpose
• write a discursive composition and offer solutions to a problem
• write a report supplying information and making recommendations

Listening Skills

• understand main points, relationships, feeling, attitude, opinion and intention in a series of listening extracts
• determine the purpose, attitude and specific details of content of a range of speakers' messages
• understand the main points and specific details of listening dialogues

Course Content

The course book is Fast Track to FCE. Focussing on the most relevant material from the book, the teacher will also supplement the course with other resources to ensure that lessons stimulate your child to learn.

Demonstrating Progress

Your child's progress is measured by continuous assessment. During the course the class teacher will set speaking, writing, reading and listening tasks in class.

Provided that your child has attended at least 75% of their classes, they will receive a report on their progress; and the areas they need to improve, and a certificate at the end of Semester B.
