About This Course

  • This course is designed for young children who are attending Primary 1 in a Hong Kong primary school.
  • Courses are specifically created for non-native speakers of English, and will develop your child’s confidence in communicating and expressing their ideas using English.
  • Our courses complement your child's learning at school and aid success in international qualifications, like Cambridge Young Learners examinations.

Course Objectives

We integrate all skills naturally into our courses. We use a story-based approach because aside from being enjoyable, stories also contextualise language for your child. Grammar and vocabulary are developed indirectly using exposure through a story and follow-on activities and tasks that are context related. This makes learning meaningful to your child and encourages them to actively use these new structures and words naturally. Phonics and pronunciation practice are also both integrated where appropriate throughout the course.

Our course aims to develop your child’s:

  • confidence when speaking English to the whole class, in small groups, and one to one with the teacher and teaching assistant.
  • ability to listen and respond to stories, poems, songs and short video excerpts.
  • listening skills in terms of following instructions and listening attentively to each other during circle-time.
  • ability to produce different types of writing, working from full sentences to short paragraphs and supported full texts.
  • vocabulary and language awareness and encourages them to use new words and structures in their speaking and writing.
  • reading skills so they can extract meaning from a short text.

Course Content

This course is designed to engage your child and is based on motivating themes and topics. The course book we use is Story Magic 2 which encourages students to make active use of the English that they have studied. To supplement and develop themes of interest, our teachers use a range of supplementary resources including big story books, songs, chants, web-based and Interactive Whiteboard resources, videos as well as materials we create. We also have a book box in each classroom to encourage independent reading.

Demonstrating Progress

Your child’s progress is measured by continuous assessment and these take place naturally and informally within class throughout the semester.

You will receive a report on your child’s progress at the end of each semester if they attend 75% of classes. Our observations on learning progress and strengths during assessments help inform our comments and the grades we award for achievement, effort and participation.

Working in Partnership

We understand that you want to be involved in and support your child’s learning. To this end we have created an outline of the Download PDF Document roles and responsibilities of all those involved in the learning process. We would appreciate it if you could take the time to read and talk about it with your child. Your child’s teacher will also do this during class.
