The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (POLYU)

PolyU offers a large number of academic, professional and technological programmes through its six faculties and two schools: applied science and textiles (including the Institute of Textiles), business, communication, construction and land use, engineering, health and social sciences, School of Design, and School of Hotel and Tourism Management. It has a student population of over 25,000, including on publicly funded programmes and self-financed courses.

The university’s Student Exchange Programme now involves more than 170 institutions in 20 countries and encompasses over 25 UK partners. Among UK exchange students, courses in the School of Design and Institute of Textiles and Clothing are highly popular. Civil and structural engineering is also a frequent choice.

Information on exchanges is available from the Academic Exchange and Collaboration Office, which arranges the logistics, orientation, social activities and runs a buddy system. Non-local students interested in full-time degree programmes go through the university’s Academic Secretariat.

The main campus is located in Kowloon, with easy access to Hong Kong Island and other parts of the city. Shared student accommodation is 10 minutes’ walk away from campus, via a covered walkway. Credit-bearing elementary Putonghua programmes are available for exchange students. There are also informal opportunities to learn Cantonese via the university’s International Club, through which local students (often “buddies”) organise social activities for overseas students.
