Lingnan is a small, liberal arts university with around 2,200 students. It is located in Tuen Mun in the New Territories and is connected to other parts of Hong Kong by bus, minibus and rail. It follows a liberal arts ethos which sets out to encourage adaptability, brainpower, and creativity in its students. Arts, business, humanities and social science programmes are available. Both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses are offered.
The university runs its student international exchange programme through its Office of Mainland and International Programmes. The office provides information and handles enquiries from prospective non-local students, offers orientation and counselling services, and organises social activities.
Lingnan has partner institutions in 12 countries, including five universities in the UK, and links with Mainland China. International students can normally take any course, although Chinese and translation programmes are not open to them unless a student is already fluent in the language. Popular study areas for international students are business and cultural studies. Credit-bearing Putonghua language classes are available for overseas students.
The university’s small size and the availability of hostel facilities on campus for many students, including non-local students, help to build a collegiate environment. International students are roomed with local students and there is a buddy system.
