HKIEd is the only University Grants Committee-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong specifically focused on teacher education and professional development. It has a total student body of around 7,000 and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Programmes on early childhood, primary, secondary, vocational and special education are available. HKIEd is located outside Tai Po in the New Territories, with bus and taxi links, and nearby train connections to other parts of the city.
Cultural interaction takes place through exchange and study abroad programmes, the presence on campus of non-local undergraduate and postgraduate students, and short-term study tours. Non-local students are not always education majors but also include those interested in a different socio-cultural experience, for example, psychology students.
HKIEd has a network of more than 50 international and mainland partner institutions, including six in the UK. A main point of contact is the Centre for International Education, which can answer enquiries and give advice on arrangements and programmes. It also provides a CIE Staff Student Lounge as a gathering point. The lounge has internet access.
Along with the regular courses offered, special modules on Hong Kong history, culture and comparative studies have been arranged for non-local students to bring them together as a group and to inform them about Hong Kong. Introductory (non-credit) Cantonese and Putonghua language courses can be made available.
Incoming students are housed on campus with a local student to encourage integration and cultural exchange. The Student Affairs Office runs a buddy system for all students at HKIEd, conducts orientation, and organises social activities.
