FameLab, part of the Science Alive programme, was held for the 3rd consecutive year in Hong Kong in November 2011!
The aim of FameLab is to encourage young scientists (20 to 35 years old) to inspire and excite public imagination with a vision of science in the 21st century.
Contestants had 3 minutes to accurately present a scientific topic to an audience and a panel of expert judges. The talk should be entertaining, original, and scientifically accurate but also engaging to a non-scientific audience. From the live auditions and video submissions, seven finalists were chosen to compete in the Hong Kong Final at the Hong Kong Science Museum. But before then, the chosen seven participated in a mandatory two-day MasterClass on 22-23 October 2011 in Hong Kong, led by a team of UK and HK science communication experts.
Note: The semi-final stage was eliminated this year.
The winner was Colin Tsang, an undergraduate in biochemistry, from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. First runner-up was Emily Siu, also from HKUST and second runner-up was Aneesha Acharya from the University of Hong Kong.
The Grand Prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the UK in June 2012 to represent Hong Kong in the FameLab International competition, to be organised by the British Council.

Languages of Presentations
Presentations can be in English or Cantonese during the live auditions and video submissions but they must have been in English for the final competition and if you win, for the International competition in the UK.
In order to communicate science effectively and accurately, the organisers encourage that you check the content of your presentation with your professors/supervisors to ensure that the scientific concept you are delivering is accurate and reflects the latest science.
