British Council collection in Hong Kong Admiralty office

The British Council Hong Kong’s Admiralty office has taken the occasion of our 60th anniversary to refresh the artwork in our public areas. The artwork featured is from the global British Council collection, started in the late 1930s and now encompassing more than 8000 works covering all media and all aspects of British art and design of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is showcased at British Council offices around the world.

Works now featured in the Hong Kong office include a collection of Henry Moore’s Head of a Girl and Mother and Child, Justine Smith’s papier maché dog Wizard, Patrick Caulfield’s the Hermit, Mark Wallinger’s brown (Mr G A Brown), prints by John Riddy and many more.

We have also commissioned a new installation, HK Fesdella, by acclaimed British artist David Batchelor. David makes three-dimensional works, photographs and drawings that relate to a long term interest in colour and urbanism. As well as holding exhibitions in the UK, he has recently exhibited in Sao Paulo and New York and has written and edited two books about colour. This latest piece makes ingenious use of coloured plastic bottles to create a light installation wrapped around the central pillar on our ground floor. The first of this series of work was displayed at London’s Festival Hall in 2006.

The new artwork and installation were launched at a reception on Tuesday 11 November, and are available for the general public to view during the building opening hours.
