AND THE WINNERS ARE ...
Thanks to everyone who took part in the competition. In total we received 772 drawings/paintings, 35 photos and 22 videos.

The Forest Fires project of our global climate programme Challenge Europe aims to raise awareness among both school children and the general public of the issue of forest fires, the importance of forests and ways to protect them.

The combination of climate change (increased heat waves, reduced rainfall etc), the fire proneness of Mediterranean forests and the fragmented forest management system have made the Greek forest fires more frequent and more intense in recent years.

The first stage of the project is a painting, video and photography competition in Greek schools on the theme Why are forests important and what can we do to protect them against forest fires. Based on the school children's materials and interviews with a variety of experts, we will create a short documentary on the issue of Greek forest fires.

We will attempt to have the documentary screened on national television and will also disseminate it to all participating schools, and through other channels such as the Internet.

Why are forests important and what can we do to protect them from forest fires?

Through this competition our Climate Advocates aim to initiate a dialogue about forest protection in Greece by encouraging school children to think about and suggest solutions for the protection of forests. What do forest fires mean to school children? Do they recognise the importance of forests and how the destruction of forests aggravates the consequences of climate change? What solutions can they suggest to protect them?

The competition is open to all primary and secondary school students in Greece, regardless of nationality. Students can enter the competition individually or as a group.
