INSIDE OUT – EXPLORING ARTS FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION

Organised by the British Council in collaboration with the Hellenic Migration Policy Institute and the Arts Centre at ACS, Inside Out – Exploring arts for social inclusion is a creative and inspirational two-day event focusing on how the arts can be successfully integrated into education and social development programmes involving refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and ethnic minority communities.

With a particular emphasis on working with children and young people, the event will bring together a range of experts who will provide a creative insight into educational policies and inclusion strategies. The programme includes participatory creative workshops, presentations and discussions, youth-led activities, performances and an informal space for networking, exchanging project information and reflection on best practice.

Throughout the two days participants will have the opportunity to explore and use various art forms including photography, dance, drama, visual arts, music, film, creative writing, as well as contributing to key questions around the issues of education and the role of the arts in the integration process:

What place do, and can, the arts have in constructing social policy and practice around immigration? Under what circumstances can participation in the arts be a key to breaking down barriers and overcoming prejudice, and have a positive impact on integration?
What is the role of arts-in-education in the integration process? Can new tools be developed to promote active citizenship within the curriculum, and what are the resources that contribute to the improvement of practice?
Can the arts raise awareness of cultural diversity and offer methods of addressing and combating social exclusion?
What role can young people from marginalised backgrounds take in the development process? How can youth-led activities be supported?

Confirmed speakers and workshop leaders include:
Stella Barnes, Eleni Chontolidou, Lena Divani, Nikos Economopoulos, Katia Gerou, Kyriakos Katzourakis, Nancy Toumpakari and Pantelis Voulgaris.

Inside Out reflects the dual complexities of the internal and external, physical and emotional experiences of those living in exile or seeking safety and refuge in a new land.

Inside Out seeks out the meeting ground between arts and social policy. It links policy and practice, theory and experience, the personal and public, and brings together artists, educators, youth workers, NGO workers, health workers, social researchers, academics, museum professionals, arts and social policy makers.

Participation in the workshop is free.
