How to apply

The Programme aims to strengthen and deepen democratic awareness and leadership through a 5-week course in the United Kingdom combining classroom study, work placements and visits. The 'ideal' candidate will be aged 25-40, working in politics, local administration or civil society, with a track record of concern for good governance and promoting democratic values. Good written and spoken English is essential.

Applications for Fellowships are currently invited from the following countries:

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.

Applications for the 2010 Programme must be submitted to your local British Council office, please click on the links above for contact details, no later than 9 November 2009. Final selection of candidates will be concluded by mid February 2009.

The John Smith Fellowship will cover all costs incurred by the Fellows' taking part in the Programme. Please note that no provision is made for an accompanying spouse or children. Fellows should not bring families to the UK with them unless they have ample funds for their support.

Candidates must have English proficiency at IELTS level 6 or above. Successful interviewees should be aware that they are likely to have to sit the IELTS exam.
