Professor Nazrul Islam    

Chairman, University Grants Commission, Bangladesh    

Professor Nazrul Islam is Chairman of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh as well as Founder-Honorary Chairman of the Centre for Urban Studies, Dhaka, Vice President, Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon and member of the Executive Council of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. He is a Member of the Urban Development Committee in the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, GOB, a Life Member of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Bangla Academy, Bangladesh Geographical Society (President, 1989-93), Bangladesh Institute of Planners and the Founder Editor of CUS Bulletin.

Prior roles include Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka from 1986-2007, teacher of Urban Development Planning at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Convener of the CPD Task Force on Social Implications of Urbanization formed by the Interim Government in 1991, Convener of the Task Force on Urban Governance in 2001 and Coordinator for the Asian Region of the Global Urban Research Initiative. He has also been Chairman of the Board of Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (DWASA), 1999-2002, member of the Dhaka Mahangar Unnyan 0 Shushashan Committee and the Advisory Committee of Dhaka Urban Transport Study, Senior Fellow of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), member of the Board of Editors, Habitat International (Pergamon Press) and has been the author/co-author/editor of 22 books. He has published more than 100 professional/academic papers in foreign and national journals and anthologies.

Professor Islam received a BA Honours and MA in Geography from the University of Dhaka. He was also educated at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada and DPU, University of London, UK.
