We apologise for the clash of dates between the Education UK exhibitions in Taiwan and Korea this year. We always try to avoid this situation, but in this case it has not been possible, for the following reasons:

• In Taipei, the World Trade Centre is the only venue available of suitable size, quality and location. British Council Taiwan therefore decided it was important to secure the venue, signing an agreement in June 2007 committing to the first weekend in November 2008.
• For Korea, it was deemed crucial that a clash with Australia's education exhibition in Seoul on 25 to 26 October 2008 be avoided. Australia has become a strong competitor, spending heavily on education and offering scholarship packages to attract academics and students. As 18 and 19 October 2008 fall within the mid-term examination period, it was decided that 1 to 2 November 2008 was the best option.

The Education UK exhibition in Korea attracts potential students who have already done some background / basic research about study in the UK, and about specific institutions. They have specific and targeted information needs, and seek to get a ‘sense’ of the institution they wish to commit to. We have relatively few ‘window-shoppers’ who are looking for introductory information about institutions. Where possible, this is an ideal market for representation by academic staff in the main subject areas, as well as international office staff.

The participation fee includes:

• 6 square metres stand, facia board and lettering, table, four chairs, table cloth
• PR campaign: advertising on web, newspapers, magazines, street banners, flyers, posters
• arrangement of an informal reception
• provision of tea and coffee during the exhibition
• production of a visitor guide book.

Stand sharing will be made available at a premium of twenty per cent on the stand costs.

Please note that the participation fee does not include international or domestic travel, accommodation, subsistence or freight, except where stated.

This year, we have set a target to reduce our overall exhibition costs by 12 per cent. We recognise that in some countries, this will not always be achievable. However, we are working with colleagues to ensure increases are kept to a minimum. These charts (14KB GIF image) show the cost breakdown for the exhibition in 2007 compared to 2008. As you can see, the only increase has been in venue hire. All other costs have remained the same. There is, however, an increase in the participant fee of just under 6.5 per cent. This is mainly due to a decline in participant numbers last year, which has meant that we have had to reduce our break-even number of participants.
