This year, we have set a target to reduce our overall exhibition costs by 12 per cent. The overall cost of the exhibition in Kolkata has been reduced by 2.18 per cent and in Delhi the overall cost has fallen by 2.58 per cent. The overall exhibition costs in Mumbai have risen by 3.8 per cent. The main reason for this is the increasing cost of newspaper advertising in the metro cities in India. However, newspaper advertising is a vital component of the successful promotion of the exhibitions. In November 2007, 35 per cent of visitors found out about the exhibitions from local newspaper advertisements, and this increased further to 45 per cent of visitors in February 2008. Another factor affecting the costs in Mumbai is that the exhibition briefing will be held in an external venue rather than at the British Council office.
The maximum number of exhibitors at the venues in Baroda and Lucknow has been kept low for 2008, as these new markets are explored. However, there is potential to increase the number of available places at these two venues for the exhibition in 2009, if the events are successful this year.
