Best of British English Language Teaching 2007
Best of British English Language Teaching (BBELT) is a biennial event organised by British Council Mexico that started in 1991 and is now unanimously recognised as the best event of its kind in the country.
This two-day conference is a forum to introduce the latest trends and novelties in ELT through presentations, talks, workshops and book and didactic material exhibits, as it congregates 800 professionals at all levels from across Mexico, Latin America and United Kingdom, together with the major British publishers present in Mexico, the most important educational distributors and various British educational organisations based in the UK, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to establish links and exchange experiences.
The ninth edition of BBELT took place on 23 and 24 February, 2007 at the Gran Meliá México Reforma Hotel, with the theme of “Getting better every day: achieving excellence in Mexican ELT” as the reflection of the continuing need for teachers to shape their profession by understanding language and how it is changing, getting to know the latest ELT trends, methods and approaches and adapting these to their own contexts in order to become better teachers.
Unlike previous events, this time organisers and speakers took a more integral perspective, multidisciplinary, multicultural, and intercultural, seeking to go beyond the purely technical aspects of language teaching. Conference guests were drawn from the academic, creative and professional spheres of English language teaching, a manifestation of multicultural Britain and forward-looking Mexico.
During the opening plenary audiences were delighted by the renowned linguist, keynote speaker Dr. David Crystal, when he discussed the global language status of English and the consequences of this newfound status for the future development of the language.
The final plenary was in charge of the second key note speaker, the British dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah, who closed the event with a powerful performance of his poems, such as What does that have to do with me?, Macho man and Talking Turkeys, allowing attendees to witness words come to life on stage.
We would like to thank speakers, participants, and sponsors, for having contributed to make Best of British ELT 2007 a professionally enriching and enjoyable experience. See you in 2009!
