Science Festivity in Alexandria

The British Council and the Planetarium Science Center (PSC) are holding a local science festival, the Annual Alexandria Science Festivity. Science festivals give science a presence in the community and offer people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to ask questions, discuss, and explore. In the process, visitors experience the pleasure of lifelong learning, whether with family, friends, or on their own.

The Annual Science Festivity targets the public in general and children in particular. It is open to the public for free. This year’s theme is “Technology”.

2 different DVDs will be shown in the Video room, Nano, The next dimension on 23 April and Nanotechnology on 24 April.

NANO: The Next Dimension

“The earth. Let’s take a look at our planet on a new scale: a billionth of a metre, a nanometre,” begins the commentary in the EU-funded documentary ‘NANO: The Next Dimension’. The film was the brainchild of a Research Directorate-General team specialising in developments surrounding nanosciences and new materials under the Commission’s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) for Research.

The documentary is the first of its kind in Europe to translate the hidden world of nanoscience into a language and format which is accessible to a wider audience. The video was probably selected by Techfilm for this reason, but also because it is really good – scientifically and cinematographically.

This film, which was produced by award-winning French producer Ex Nihilo, shows several examples of nanoparticles in action, including coatings which make sunglasses scratch-proof and other surfaces waterproof and even fire-proof. The applications are almost endless for these “magical” particles.

It includes contributions from respected scientists in the field, numerous 3D animations and some groundbreaking shots of nanomaterials in action.

Nanotechnology
This is on nanotechnology, aimed particularly at a young audience and seeks to both inform and raise interest in nanotechnology and research. It received a Prize from the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Physical Training in the category "film dealing with education" at the Festival: TECHFILM 2003, Czech Republic and a Diploma of honour in the 33rd edition of the Roshd International Film Festival in Iran.
