News

The Association of African Universities is calling for papers for its 12th general conference, to be held in Abuja from 4 to 9 May 2009 under the theme “sustainable development in Africa: the role of higher education”. Abstracts must cover the sub-themes: teaching and learning; R&D; engaging the community; and greening the campus. For further information please see the

Invitations open for Education Partnerships in Africa: EPA is providing grant funding to FE and HE partnerships between English and sub-Saharan African FE and HE institutions to build capacity for entrepreneurship and employability in Africa in collaboration with employers and social enterprises. The application deadline for new partnerships under round 2 is 30th November 2008.

Travel grants of up to £1500 are also available to English partners for scoping visits to potential partners in Africa to support discussions between English institutions and potential HE/FE partners in sub-Saharan Africa. The closing date for grants is 27th February 2009.

Recent events

British Council Ethiopia DelPHE round four launch: the fourth round of funding opportunities for DelPHE was announced at its offices in Addis Ababa. Priority in this fourth round of the programme’s funding is to be given to those partnerships focusing on science and technology, engineering, governance and human rights as well as business and enterprise.

There are currently nine existing DelPHE projects being led by Ethiopian universities based in Addis Ababa, Gondar, Hawassa, Bahir Dar and Adamma – projects which focus on education, health, science and peace and security issues.

Education Partnerships in Africa Launch Event: More than 300 HE and FE sector representatives and businesses joined DIUS and the British Council to launch the new EPA programme at Imperial College London on 8th and 9th September. The event highlighted best practice and outcomes achieved from projects supported under the former England-Africa Partnerships programme. Read more about the event.

Stephen Dunnett, DelPHE Project Delivery Manager UK met with co-ordinators from Tanzania - Strengthening health information & library services project and Community Health Information for Poverty Alleviation in Sierra Leone. Read the visit report (MS Word).
