Our Future, our Activism. Our Challenge
In 2008, Road to Davos brought 60 young people to East Horsley near Guildford, from 14 to 19 January, for five days of workshops, exercises, discussions and debates, visits and other activities. At the end of the five days, the group will selected and sent six of their own to the World Economic Forum 2008 annual meeting in Davos, themed "The Power of Collaborative Innovation". The elected six young activists participated at the session "Future Shifts: The Voice of the Next Generation" on 24 January 2008.
The Road to Davos project was launched in 2007 by the British Council in co-operation with the World Economic Forum. This year, Cyprus was proud to sent, one outstanding Cypriot to participate, Christina Morfaki, a 16 year old student from the English School in Nicosia who travelled to Guildford, England on 14 – 19 January and reports back on her experiences and achievements:
"Being given the opportunity to participate in the ‘Road to Davos’ programme I was able to meet 59 young activists from 43 different countries. During the workshops we worked together in teams very constructively. Participating in several workshops we were able to improve our skills in several areas: team work, presenting ourselves to others, speaking in front of an audience, use of body language, voice projection, listening to other people’s opinions etc. Those skills were transmitted to us in a very creative way: presenting our own video clips, preparing performances, small debates, games…. In addition to that we had the opportunity to visit the House of Commons in London where we shared our experiences and activism with several important people from different areas. On the last day we voted for the six who have represented us all in Davos and tried to pass on our message to the rest of the world.
Despite our cultural differences we all had the same goals: to change this world to the better. We didn’t look at colours, religion, and culture. From the first moment we met, we managed to get on perfectly. After and between workshops we were all sharing our enthusiasm, energy and ideas in several discussions. Through that, I was able to learn a lot about other people and each one of the 59 taught me something different. It is amazing how we all became like a family in just six days. The impressive thing is how awesome the results were when we all worked as a team. Our common goal will be to transmit this idea to the rest of the world. That’s why we are now all still talking through the internet and we are planning to create an organisation. I will never forget the friends I made there and the funny moments we allhadtogether.
The Road to Davos experience gave me a lot of new ideas as well as inspiration concerning my activism. Now I feel more ready, with more energy and confidence to fight for all I want to achieve and I would like to thank the British Council for giving me such an opportunity"
