“Hamlet” is the most famous, the most performed and probably the best play in the history of humanity. After the Bible, “Hamlet” is the first most discussed subject in various writings. After Jesus, Hamlet is most discussed personality in history. Each era, each society that has something to tell about itself has its own “Hamlet”.
Some of the finest actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with their colleagues - guests from Zagreb, Ljubljana, Belgrade and director Haris Pašović with participation of the artists from UK, France, Spain and Turkey, have produced a „Hamlet“ that is relevant for at the beginning of the 21st century. It is the biggest theatrical co-production in the region ever and perhaps the largest cultural co-productions in the region in the last 20 years.
Actors/Hamlet
Hamlet and Ophelia are played by the youngest starts of Bosnian-Herzegovina theatre: Amar Selimović and Zana Marjanović. One of the most popular Croatian actors Damir Markovina plays Horatio and a young up-coming actor from Zagreb Frano Maskovć plays Claudius. Some of the leading actors from the region such as Miodrag Krivokapić (Belgrade) and Damjana Černe (Ljubljana) are in the cast as well. The well-known trio of designers known as Kao Pao Shu creates costumes and the set is designed by one of best architects in Bosnia and Herzegovina - Amir Zec Vuk together with an excellent architect Lada Maglajlić.
It is interesting that our production of Hamlet is situated in the Ottoman sultan’s court in Istanbul. It grants to our concept an exceptional freshness and up-to-datedness, and in the same time very theatrical in its oriental colors, light, sounds and dynamics. Hamlet is universal, and may happen at the Danish, Elizabethan or Ottoman royal courts since we all share the same problems and dilemmas.
