The British Council is delighted to acknowledge 15 years of co-operation to support China's move towards a society underpinned by the Rule of Law. We wish to mark the occasion with a series of law events under the banner of China-UK@Law. Our success over the preceding 15 years could not have been achieved without the strong commitment of many organisations and individuals both in the UK and China.
The programme began in 1989 with funding from the Department for International Development, and continues with support from the Lord Chancellor's Department. 'The Practical Training Scheme for Young Lawyers' has proved so successful it is still thriving and training the next generation of Chinese lawyers. This and other programmes have been complemented by an ongoing series of projects involving research, workshops, seminars, forums and study visits.
In October and November 2004, we are working in partnership with key UK and Chinese legal organisations to deliver China-UK@Law, a series of events which will include the launch of the Young Lawyers Online Community. China-UK@Law will be the most important and far-reaching programme of legal activities organised by the British Council in recent years. China-UK@Law also provides an opportunity to thank both our Chinese and UK partners who are always generous with their time, showing just how much the relationship means to both countries, and to announce an exciting new direction for the British Council's work in this area in the future.
