UK-China Forum on Scientific and Ethical Aspects of Stem Cell Research

The UK-China Forum on Scientific and Ethical Aspects of Stem Cell Research was aimed to improve people's awareness of bioethics and to strengthen mutual understanding between UK and China in this field.

The Forum was a satellite conference under the 8th World Bioethics Congress. It was held on 5th August 2006 in partnership with Peking Union Medical College, the leading organisation in China in the field of bioethics. Three UK experts and four Chinese experts attended the Forum and made keynotes speeches.

There were more than 70 scientists, ethicist, scientific journalists and postgraduate students attended the forum. There were Question and Discussion after each presentation, and the audience were very enthusiastic to ask questions, which showed that they were really very interested in the topic. The atmosphere of the Forum was very positive and academic, and both the UK experts and the Chinese experts were satisfied with the platform created by the British Council for them to communicate in depth in this field. One Australian expert who attended the 8th World Bio-ethics Congress asked one of the UK speaker to convey the message that she appreciated the British Council’s efforts and contribution in creating such a good opportunity for them to gather together to discuss thoroughly about bio-ethics issues, and she thought it was very fruitful.

The forum also attracted about 10 scientific media (such as the Health News, and the Science Times) to report, because it was one of the few international conferences with simultaneous interpretation under the 8th World Bio-ethics Congress. Academician Liu Depei, the leading person in this field in China was one of the co-chairman of the conference, and this was the highlight of the Congress and attracted the media's attention as well.
