WHERE WE ARE IN CHINA

who we are

An organisation creating opportunities worldwide

The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.

Our Purpose
We build trust and engagement for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people worldwide.

Where we are in China
We opened our first office in Asia in Chongqing in 1943. We now have centres in
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. So whether you want to learn English, study in Britain or discover the latest ideas from the UK - this is the place to start.

In China we operate as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Beijing, and the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.

THE BRITISH COUNCIL – WORLDWIDE
In the UK the British Council is registered as a charity (not-for-profit-organisation) and operates as an executive non-departmental public body. We receive a grant from the British Government. The British Council has 7,500 staff in offices, teaching centres, libraries and information and resource centres in 233 towns and cities in 109 countries and territories worldwide

Diversity and Equality

We have developed our Integrated Equality Scheme to help us promote equality and eliminate discrimination in the areas of gender, race and disability. Find out how we are applying this scheme worldwide.
