Support for English Teachers

The British Council is committed to support the Cameroon’s government bilingualism agenda by providing services to learners and teachers of English.

English Teachers’ Toolkit
The British Council produces several websites that support English teachers worldwide. Given the problems many teachers in Cameroon have in accessing the internet, we have transferred a selection of materials from the main website,
Teaching English, to booklet form. To this we have added more ideas to make a Toolkit.

The toolkit is made up of 6 elements

A guide to establishing an English Club in your school. This booklet was written with the help of teachers working for VSO in northern Cameroon.
16 Articles selected from the British Council website Teaching English.
8 one-page stories in simple English for students of all ages.
10 questions asked by teachers around the world and the responses from other teachers.
A selection of materials your can use in class or in English Clubs.
A full list of programmes run by the British Council in Cameroon for schools.

A Toolkit is available to your school free of charge. To receive your copy, write to a British Council office, addressing your letter English Teachers’ Toolkit. Alternatively you can call in at a British Council office in Cameroon or email us at bc-yaounde@britishcouncil.cm

Working with Partners
The British Council is always looking for opportunities to work with partners. It works with VSO to support their ELT programme in northern Cameroon. It works with CAMELTA in developing and facilitating its work around the country. And it works as part of a regional British Council to promote ELT. For example, in March 2005, we sponsored two Cameroonian teachers to attend a Hornby school in Kano, Nigeria.

Learning and Information Centre Yaounde
The collection of ELT materials in the new Yaounde Learning and Information Centre provides access to books and other resources. These materials have been selected to demonstrate the contribution the UK has made over the last 15 years to the teaching and learning of English.
