Do you want to practise more listening?
Would you like to work on your pronunciation?
Are you interested in revising and consolidating your grammar?
Do you fancy reading a newspaper or a book?
Are you interested in browsing through the World Wide Web?
Our English Language teaching centres, have a well equipped cyber centre designed to help you improve your English through self study. Membership is included in your student fees.
Browsing the web Both centres contain many different types of books, cassette players, video recorders and computers. The books and any accompanying cassettes are organised according to skills: pronunciation, listening, reading and writing, or topics: grammar practice, vocabulary, business and exams.
The books are also colour-coded according to level: Some material has more than one coloured label on it; this means it is suitable for more than one level. You may find some of the material at your level too easy or too difficult - don’t worry! Just try the next level up or down.
There is a library of readers, which you can borrow for a week at a time. If you want to take any books home, you will have to pay a deposit of 5,000 FCFA, which will be returned to you at the end of your studies at the British Council, provided you have not lost or damaged any books. Some readers have accompanying cassettes; you are not allowed to take these home.
Testing listening and pronunciation
There are assistants working at the cyber centres to show you around and help you find the materials for your level. You will need to ask a helper to give you any audio or video cassette or CD-ROM you want to use.
Completing assignments When you use the centre, you will have to complete the log book with accurate details of date, name, registration identity number, level, the material you are using, the time you start and finish, and your signature. We ask you to hand in your student card at reception and to leave your bags outside.
Members of the public who are not students can also use the cyber centre on payment of 20,000 FCFA per month, to the Registrar. They will need to take a placement test (cost 5,000 FCFA)to determine their level.
Our cyber centres offer you access to the World Wide Web (WWW). Visit these centres to study and improve on your English as well as browse the WWW.
Registered members of the cyber centre and our students are each entitled to unlimited access to the Internet per registration period. Our cyber centres are open from Monday to Saturday. Check the opening times at each centre.
