Celebrating Darwin's legacy

Darwin Now is the British Council’s contribution to the international celebration of the 200 year anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150 year anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.

Charles Darwin’s works continues to influence biology and other branches of science today. His work gives us a perspective on some of the most important questions that face us in the 21st century.

Darwin Now Exhibition in Bulgaria

Darwin Now exhibition consists of panels exploring Darwin’s life, his groundbreaking theory, and his ideas that are still relevant today. There’s also an interactive element around a central iconic tree, which allows visitors to share their own ideas about Darwin and evolution.
This exhibition will be presented in Bulgaria in partnership with the Natural History Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. After its initial display in Sofia it will be touring around the country.

Past Events on the occasion of Charles Darwin anniversary

Photo Essay Competition

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, his theory of evolution and the influential legacy and far-reaching scope of works, the British Council and the National Natural History Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in partnership with Forum Democrit and NC Future Now organised an online photo essay competition for young people on the topic of

Evolution

Rules:
Participants had to present 3 to 5 photographs accompanied by an essay no longer than one A4 page.
The photos and the text had to be on the topic of Evolution.
The text had to be written in English.
Participants had to be 16 to 18 years old.
Any cameras were acceptable, including mobile phone cameras.
Only minimal image processing was allowed (e.g. brightness, contrast, colour, etc).
The images were to be sent to konkurs@gudevica.org in .jpg format (not bigger than 1 Mb еach) together with the essay.
The competition deadline was 24 April 2009, 24:00 GMT+2
The jury consisted of photographers, scientists and teachers of English.

The winners were announced on 11 May during the Famelab 2009 competition final in Sofia.
Elitsa Zhougleva from Pazardzhik and Alex Sredov from Kjustendil are the authors of the best 2 photo essays who will go to the UK for an International Student Summit from 30 June to 2 July at the Natural History Museum in London, organised and funded by the British Council.
