Entertainment meets education or ... when science takes to the stage
"This is a real departure from the traditional science lecture. Science is often associated with tough words and numbers but it can be truly beautiful. We hope Visualise will open the eyes of a whole new audience to science." science made simple’s founder, Wendy Sadler said;
British Council and the Ministry of Education and Science, with the support of Sofia Municipality and Forum Democrit organised a live science demonstration show Visualise - the beauty of science
The show took place on 20 September 2007 at Nikolay Binev National Youth Theatre
Less explanation; more exploration.
Visualise - the beauty of science was a truly engaging spectacle, an experiment that began by removing all verbal explanation from science made simple’s award-winning interactive presentations. Physical theatre, live demonstrations, projected images and music combined to create a wordless experience of wonder. There was no trickery. It was live. Ordinary objects were used in extraordinary ways to create swirling whirlwinds, giant smoke rings and dancing flames. The lack of language meant that the show was suitable for all ages. A playful mix of interactive experiment and mischievous fun. The audience was invited to make their own observations and discoveries, igniting their curiosity and ultimately motivating them to find out for themselves how the world works.
Visualise – the beauty of science had its premiere in August 2007 at the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Award-winning Welsh company ‘science made simple’ (biography in Annex 1) was shortlisted for a prestigious theatre award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. ‘visualise – the beauty of science’ was in the running for the Total Theatre Award for experimentation, after beating off stiff competition from over 400 competing productions.
British Council in Bulgaria would like to take this opportunity to thank its media partners Bulgarian National Television, Capital Weekly and Dnevnik Daily.
Visualise – the beauty of science is one component of the Beautiful Science project, a British Council initiative - linking science, education and the arts – which ultimately seeks to inspire young people to consider a career in science and encourage young scientists to communicate with the wider public, in an open, comprehensive, inspired and interactive way. The project is implemented by the British Council in 9 countries in South East Europe region: Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Israel, Romania, Serbia and Turkey and the UK.
