British Council offices in Rio de Janeiro and Recife has hosted the first Café Scientifique by video conference in Brazil. We have invited Dr. Tom Shakespeare, one of Britain’s leading bio-ethics scientists currently Director of Outreach for the Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences Research Institute (PEALS), Newcastle, to facilitate a lively discussion about Stem Cell Therapies.

This is a current issue in Brazil, as the government recently approved scientific research with human embryonic stem cells, as part of the Bio security Law. We have discussed the social and ethical implications of such therapies.
