“DARWIN NOW” COMPETITION – AWARD CEREMONY

The aim of Darwin Now online competition was to encourage creativity and critical thinking with elementary and high school students. After hard work of selecting the five winners of Darwin Now competition done by the jury we hosted award ceremony held in our premises on 8 April 2010.

Ognjen Danilović presenting “Era of Smileys”

Five competition winners had a chance to present their work and to elaborate the ideas behind it in front of BC team and Microsoft representatives. Ognjen Danilović, the first prize winner, who worked together in a team with Jelena Vidović, explained the message they were trying to send out through their design: We wanted to present the (im)balance between the traditional and contemporary in a funny way. Since it is very common lately to express our feelings through a “smiley” it seems that we have entered into a “Smiley Era”. Idea of a “smiley” as current phase in evolution is a result of our inspiration by Darwin’s theories.” We hope Ognjen and Jelena will enjoy expressing their creativity now with the help of Compaq 610 Notebook PC.

Ena Šećić, the second prize winner, wrote a literary work “Drvo Života” (The tree of Life). Darwin’s abstract portrayal of tree with the “I think” note that I came across several years ago inspired me to research and finally write a story with the same title.”, says Ena Šečić who was awarded a HP wireless printer.

“The essence of evolution is unity, not competition. It enabled the existence of the world as we know it today”, says Inasa Bibić, the third prize winner in her excellent overview of Darwin, his life and work. The award will surely be of a great help in her future literary strivings.

Naida Šuta, the third prize winner, shared her amazing portrayal of connection between Darwin’s theories and war. Inspired by the stories she has been told by her family she wrote an excellent piece on survival of the fittest and connection it has with the war.
