Higher Education Links

Interested to know about the Higher Education Links Scheme?

If you are from a public university in Bangladesh and are interested in developing a link or partnership with a similar institution in the UK and/or other countries, you might be interested to know about the Higher Education Links Scheme.  It is funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) through Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE) Programme and is intended to assist in the development of curriculum, teaching, research or management capacity and promote science and technology related knowledge and skills.

What is the Higher Education Links Scheme?
A HE Link involves collaboration between at least two higher education institutions (one in UK and the other overseas) which ultimately works towards reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development in Bangladesh and other overseas countries. Links operate in a wide range of disciplines including education, health, environment and human rights.

Our New Links Programme:

We are currently inviting applications from eligible Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Bangladesh to participate in a new British Council-funded Higher Education Links Programme commencing from this financial year 2007-08. This link will be initially for a period of two years. The deadline for submitting completed application for 2007/8 ended on 13th September 2007. For further information please read the guidance notes and download the application form.

Examples of links that have been funded in Bangladesh:
Renewable Energy, which is an engineering sector link between the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and University of Loughborough. The link is creating an opportunity for technology transfer and upgrading of knowledge in the field of Renewable Energy technology and its appropriate application in rural Bangladesh. Through training, research and dissemination of knowledge, an emphasis is given for the development of low-cost wind turbine for irrigation, fish farm aeration, solar dryers, river current usage and biomass.

Tobacco Usage, which is a survey based link between the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) and Department of Biological Anthropology, University of Cambridge, UK. This link examines trends and behaviour of Tobacco usage amongst three population groups of adults, teenagers and school goers. This survey has been a significant addition to government activities on tobacco usage and provides a guideline to control the emerging trend.

Women and Development, which is developing curriculum and community based approaches through a link between University of Rajshahi, and University of Manchester. Through extensive community and issue based initiatives on women’s health issues, sustainable development and poverty of women the link has introduced new curriculum, modules and courses for the Department of Sociology.

Promoting Child Development, which is a tri- faced link between the Child Development Centre of the Dhaka Shishu Hospital, Institute of Child Health, London and Department of Child Health, University of Newcastle. With the target group " Children with disabilities" the link has created a very positive changes toward child development in communities throughout Bangladesh. It has involved a very large groups of people, parents, practitioners, therapists and experts on the disability of the children.
