In recent years Azerbaijan has implemented a range of educational projects to bring the country’s educational system up to international standards. These projects encourage the use of the most up-to-date teaching methods in all areas of education, including English language teaching. Improving the teaching of English is part of the country’s transition to an open and democratic society. Additionally, English language teaching is crucial as English is an important means of communication.
My participation in INSETT (In Service Teacher Training) seminars held by the British Council enabled me to acquire the most modern and innovative teaching methods. Teachers from Ismailly, Ali Bayramli, Ujar and Baku participate with a great deal of enthusiasm. The age of seminar participants range from 21 to 72.
These seminars have been very fruitful and productive. Although the sessions often last from nine in the morning until six in the evening, no one feels tired due to the positive and friendly atmosphere. Participants in a seminar in Bilgah, for example, said that the event had really enriched their lives. Myself and five other teachers from Ismailly redesigned our own course book materials so that they reflected modern teaching methods.
Modern teaching methods require a lot of learning and hard work. However, newly published textbooks are very helpful in implementing these innovative methods. They offer a wide variety of teaching materials for a variety of classes across a range of levels which will make lessons more encouraging and effective. Students work hard and are encouraged to learn independently. This is done through students interacting in pairs and groups and expressing themselves freely in class discussions. This helps to increase and consolidate their knowledge.
I am very grateful to the British Council and the Ministry of Education for organizing this great event.
