Judith Bingham

Judith Bingham's association with music in education began in 1993 when 200 schoolchildren from Moss Side, one of Manchester's most multi-racial but deprived areas, produced a companion piece to her monumental orchestral work Chartres, performing it under the watchful eyes of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra who were playing the official score. The result was a commission from the London Symphony Orchestra, The Red-Hot Nail, for four schools groups and nine instrumentalists. It is now a classic with multiple productions throughout the UK.

The Mysteries of Adad followed, devised by the composer for the LSO, but able to adapt to any reasonable space and collection of objects, genuine or not. 1999 saw the creation of Inside the Mandala , a project with dance and music animateurs, also with the BBC Philharmonic.

Bingham’s hands-on projects work at any number of levels: encouraging children to have a great time while looking at serious issues and gaining insight into performing and composing concepts almost without realising it.
