The unit displays three images in sequence, giving the illusion of one image dissolving into the next over an eight-second period of time.
Each designer produced three images to be shown on the Chameleon Unit. While each unit is unique, certain themes and approaches became apparent. Some designers chose to explore national identity - what it was like to live in Britain at the end of the twentieth-century and what it means to be British. Others chose to look at the mystery of technology and the changing visual language of graphic design.
The exhibition was designed by Bump and featured work by Peter Anderson at Interfield, Jonathan Barnbrook, Bless the Artist, Blue Source, Rebecca Brown and Mike Heath, Bump, Fly, Graven Images, Angus Hyland at Pentagram, Seonaid Mackay, Miles Murray Sorrell Fuel, Multistorey, North, OS2, David Revell, Alex Rich, Peter Saville, Tank, Tomato, and Simon Withers.
The exhibition launched in London in April 1999 and traveled to Nicosia, Bahrain, Delhi, Bombay, Vilnius, Helsinki, Estonia, Tallin and finished in Syria in February 2001.
