Picture This Latin America tour poster. Designed by Angus Highland, illustrated by Marion Deuchars
In September 2002 the Picture This: Contemporary Illustration From London exhibition toured to Santiago, Chile.
Angus Hyland, the co-curator of the exhibition and graphic partner of the design firm Pentagram, accompanied the exhibition to Chile. Angus ran a series of seminars and workshops for the British Council. He gave a lecture to students at the Universidad Diego Portales on recent developments in graphic design in the UK and participated in a round-table session with design academics and professionals, discussing graphic design in publishing. He also worked with the Association of Chilean Advertising Agencies, in particular with the creative teams of the agencies to discuss graphic design's commercial application in the context of advertising. The session examined the challenges and the rewards of the client/ creative relationship. Angus also be conducted a workshop with second year design students at the Catholic University of Chile.
Chile is currently one of the most, if not the most stable and strong economies in Latin America. The Chilean government has emphasised that the arts and culture is one of its key priorities. The combination of these developments is slowly transforming Chile, in particular Santiago, into a more cosmopolitan place with younger people increasingly concerned with trends, style and travel.
One area of Chilean life which is developing incredibly rapidly, but which still lags behind the rest of the world, is design. With a stronger economy, Chileans have now begun to focus on aesthetics and good design in all aspects of their daily life. This is also reflected in the strong growth in numbers of students enrolling in design courses. Recent British Council activities such as Millennium Products, Satellites of Fashion, Cause + Effect have confirmed this trend as audiences have responded incredibly favourably, recognising that British design and expertise can play a real role in Chile's cultural development.
Angus studied graphic design at London College of Printing and the Royal College of Art. He ran his own studio in Soho, London for ten years before becoming a partner with Pentagram in 1998. He has worked with a wide range of private and public clients including Asprey, Garrard, BMP DDB, The Crafts Council and the Royal Academy.
