'The fusion of art forms is startling, thrilling and a brand new artistic expression.' Evening Standard

Sadler’s Wells’ resident dance company, Random, celebrates its 10th anniversary year with an ambitious new work, Nemesis. In an explosive partnership with Jim Henson’s Creature Workshop (animatronic experts and creators of The Muppets, Lost in Space and The Dark Crystal), Scanner (composer, musician and sound creator), Lucy Carter (lighting architect/designer), Ravi Deepres (digital artist) and Random’s Artistic Director, Wayne McGregor.

Random Dance Company’s work focuses on the exploration of dance and technology. It catapulted to international recognition with its digital creations and incredible dance, collaborating with cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary artists on the creation of a trilogy of award-winning works: The Millennarium (1997), Sulphur 16 (1998) and Aeon (2000). Random is also in demand for site-specific projects. Recent project sites include the National Botanical Gardens of Wales and Canary Wharf underground station. The company has toured extensively in Europe, USA, Canada, Israel, Japan and Malaysia.

Following several attempts to promote a major British dance company to the Venice Biennale, the Council is happy to support this tour of technology-based work. It is the first visit by Random Dance Company to Italy (apart from a performance at Castiglioncello some years ago in a reduced form without sets) and as such is intended as a showcase performance which it is hoped will lead to further engagements in Italy. The tour will build bridges between Italy and the UK in the creative industries and performing arts sector. If the tour is a success we would hope to take more UK and British Council supported dance to the Venice Biennale in future.
