Following the conclusion of its UK tour, the photographer Kate Mellor offered her exhibition to us for overseas touring. Her work attracted a great deal of interest from overseas offices and was shown in Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar between 2000 and 2001.

As a pure spectacle of coastal light and luminosity Mellor’s photographs have few contemporary parallels. Viewers are seduced by the vibrancy and range of the British coastline which she has photographed using a panoramic camera. Taking Dover as her starting point, the traditional entry/exit point from Britain, Mellor followed the coast at precise 50km intervals, completely encircling the island. The exhibition also seeks to question many of the underlying assumptions regarding the relationship of Britain to her European neighbours and analyses the background to some of our most persistent cultural constructs.

Kate Mellor works form part of the British Council Collection
