IYDEY award

International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award

When we think of design the words that come to mind are form, function, colour and texture. When we think of South Africa words like possibility, intriguing, vibrant and potential come to mind. Let’s combine the two; that is design and South Africa, and a name that you will hear about, if you haven’t heard about him already, is Y Tsai or Tsai as he prefers to call himself.

Tsai is South Africa’s 2008 International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award(IYDE) finalist. A University of Cape Town graduate, he uses eastern influence, mixed with inspirations from diverse South African culture, to build a body of work that has already earned him a number of accolades and awards, including the prestigious International Red Dot Award 2007 and the local Topbilling Momentum Lifestyle Award 2007.

‘‘South Africa has a lot of need for design orientated solutions in the low cost housing area for example, and designers like myself need to constantly come up with design solutions on a mass scale, but there are a lot of entrepreneurial elements that need to go into it,’’ says Tsai.

With a strong social responsibility thread, weaving through most of his work, Tsai is passionate about using his creativity constructively. Humbled that he was chosen as the South Africa finalist he considered it, ‘’A great privilege to take his work and a South African flavour to the international arena as an emerging South African designer, and to have access to international audiences and possible clients. We have many other ideas and products that are designed in the South African context, but also have international appeal. I believe the IYDEY participation will allow us to expand our vision and ambition.’’

Tsai is one of ten finalists who will compete for the actual award drawn from a range of sectors including: architecture, graphic design, product design, design promotion, and interactive and digital media. The countries taking part in this year’s award are Argentina, China, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa and Slovenia, Thailand and Venezuela.

As a finalist, Tsai will join 8 - 10 other finalists in September 2008, for a twelve d ay UK tour of the national design industry, which will culminate in them attending 100% Design (18-21 September 2008) and London Design Festival (September 2008). There the overall winner will be chosen and will receive a financial prize and their own stand at 100% Design 2008

Andrea Ogle, British Council Project Officer commented that, ‘’Not only has Tsai demonstrated that he takes initiative and is actively applying his skills to making a difference in poor communities, specifically in homes where families live in small crowded spaces, but his socially responsible approach to design encourages other designers to care about their country and their communities.

Currently running a multi-disciplinary practice - Tsai Design Studio Tsai involves the fields of product design, furniture, interior design and architecture into his work. His latest award ‘The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa’ was in February 2008 at the Cape Town Design Indaba, for the ‘Nested Bunk Beds.’ As a design entrepreneur, he is an active member of a new NGO company ‘Shoebox Homes’ – to bring better lifestyle and the best use of space to those in overcrowded, tiny, low cost houses. The space saving bed system was introduced into an Aids Orphanage near Cape Town, which received wide public attention, including several television airtimes.

South African young designers are making a mark for themselves locally and abroad. Tsai is no exception and with his drive to ensure that his skill as an architect and a designer make the lives of those less fortunate full of potential, possibility and colour, and enable them to function and contribute positively to their communities and society, then we all stand to win.

About the IYDE Award 2008
In 2008 the British Council has presented the International Young Design Entrepreneur (IYDE) award for the fourth time. IYDE champions and celebrates the importance of creative entrepreneurs working in the field of design. It was awarded in partnership with 100% Design, London’s international trade fair for furniture and interiors.

IYDE was presented for the first time in 2005, and since then 30 young design entrepreneurs from 17 countries have taken part, building an active alumni network in the process.

10 international finalists for the award will visit the UK in September 2008 to undertake a common programme where they will take part in valuable networking both with key UK design sector partners and amongst their IYDE peers.

Awards criteria - Defining a creative entrepreneur
For the purpose of this awards programme we will define a creative entrepreneur as follows:

Someone working in the creative industries who is able to demonstrate business success in the classic terms of business growth (profit, market share, employees) and/or in terms of their reputation (quality and aesthetic) amongst their peers.
Someone working in the creative industries who has developed a successful (in terms of impact and reach) social or not-for-profit enterprise in this sector.
Someone working in the creative industries who has shown leadership in the industry by championing its development in their country.
Someone working in the creative industries who has developed initiatives (exhibitions, trade fairs etc) that develop and grow the market for a particular creative sector in their country.

Please Note: The IYDE awards are unique in rewarding entrepreneurial ability. The finalist had to be active in the creative process, but must have been secondary to their focus as an entrepreneur in the promotion of their creative sector in South Africa. Finalists were judged solely on the merit of their entrepreneurial abilities in the industry.

UK Tour, 100% Design
In September 2008, the 8-10 finalists will arrive in the UK for an approx. 12 day tour of the national design industry, which will culminate in attending 100% Design (18-21 September 2008) and London Design Festival (September 2008, specific dates still to be confirmed). This programme, which is created with UK partners, will take them to London and Glasgow to meet leaders of the design sector and will comprise visits to designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, publishers and cultural institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture.

100% Design
This is one of the world's most important contemporary interior design exhibitions presenting the latest in furniture, lighting, and accessories. The fair is the UK's premier contemporary interiors event for the contract market. Whilst at 100% Design they will be promoted in a display about the IYDE award and their work at the British Council stand and in a printed brochure to be distributed at the Fair.

Presentation of work
All finalists will be given the opportunity to promote a piece of design from their country at the British Council stand in 100% Design. All finalists will be asked to choose a design piece from their country not yet available in the UK but that they believe could have a UK and wider international appeal. Experts from our Design team will select several pieces to be presented at our curated stand at 100% Design.

During IYDE we anticipate finalists will:

Take part in a showcase opportunity at 100% Design to promote a piece of work or innovation in design from their country which they feel is of interest to the UK and wider international market.
Website showcase. In addition, work selected for the showcase will also be featured on our Creative Economy webpage for visitors to vote for their favourite.
