Learn English at the British Council

We offer a variety of English courses for adults and young learners, including more specific courses for English for work and exam preparation. We also offer primary storytelling and secondary literature courses for our young learners during the school holidays.

The British Council is the UK’s official cultural relations organisation that delivers hundreds of projects in the areas of education, arts, science, sport and governance. We are a world leader in English language teaching and have been providing high quality English course in Mauritius for more than five years.

You will learn and improve your English more quickly by studying with a group of people who are at your level. You will study on a structured course with clear and achievable goals and you will know how you are progressing because you will be monitored and counselled by your teacher.  You will get plenty of opportunity to use English in realistic situations allowing you to communicate accurately and fluently with other speakers of English in the real world.

How can I register?

Our placement testing procedure takes about 1 hour in total. It allows us to determine your ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. With this information we are able to recommend classes which will be of an appropriate level to allow you to maximise your language development. The placement test is Rs 300 per person.

How can I pay for my course?
You can pay the course fees by cash and debit/credit card. Payment by cheque can only be by prior arrangement with the British Council. Payments for courses must be made before your course starts.
What courses can I take?

We offer English courses for primary children (7-10 years), senior young learners (11-17 years) and adults (18+ years) throughout the year. We have three 12-week terms starting in January, May and August. We also offer primary storytelling and secondary literature courses for our young learners during the school holidays.

Primary 

12 weeks - 24 hours (2 hour classes, once a week)

1 week - 15 hours (3 hour classes, 5 times a week)

Adult General English 

12 weeks - 36 hours (1.5 hour classes, twice a week)

2 days - 10 hours (5 hour classes over two Saturdays)

Adult Presentation Skills 

4 weeks – 16 hours (2 hour classes, twice a week)

Adult Report Writing Skills 

4 weeks – 16 hours (2 hour classes, twice a week)

Pre-University Skills 

2 weeks – 20 hours (2.5 hour classes four days a week)

What are the Course times?
Our Teaching Centre operates a Monday to Saturday working week. While class times may vary from term to term according to demand and teacher availability, please see table below for class times for last term. 

Primary Saturday 0845 - 1045 and 1115 - 1315
Wednesday 1545 - 1745

Senior Saturday 1015 - 1315 and 1415 - 1715
Tuesday to Friday 1515 - 1645 or Tuesday & Thursday 1700 - 1830

Holiday Monday to Friday 0900 - 1200
Adult General English Tuesday and Thursday or Wednesday & Friday, 1700 - 1830
IELTS workshop Monday to Friday 1730 - 1930

Saturdays 1000 - 1600 (including 1 hour lunch break)

Corporate Clients Class times can be during normal office working hours or, subject to negotiation, according to your requirements and trainer availability.

Who are our teachers?
You will learn from highly experienced speakers, who can teach you to speak fluently with accurate grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary because they all have an internationally recognised English language teaching qualification and an average of more than 10 years experience.

Are there any other benefits?
We are closed on public holidays although classes are replaced within the term.
We reserve the right to change the course schedule or cancel a course.
No reimbursements can be made once the class has started.  Exceptional refunds will be given at the management’s discretion but a 15% administrative fee will be charged.
The maximum number of students enrolled in a class may vary according to the course but does not exceed 20.
Our teaching centre is registered with the Mauritius Qualifications Authority (MQA) and our Adult courses are MQA approved.
